Can General Dentists Do Orthodontics?

Short answer

Yes. A BDS dentist can provide orthodontic treatment within the rules of the state dental council, provided the dentist is trained, chooses cases that match their skill, and does not present themselves as a specialist. Training in diagnosis, biomechanics and finishing is what makes results predictable.

What the BDS permits and where the limits sit

Orthodontic tooth movement is part of the general dental curriculum, and many BDS graduates in India offer braces and aligners in their own clinics. The limits come from two places. The first is your dental council's rules on how you describe your practice: a dentist without a registered specialist qualification should not call themselves an orthodontist or a specialist. The second is your own competence, which depends on training, case selection and the support you have when a case behaves differently from the plan.

Where untrained treatment goes wrong

Problems in orthodontics rarely begin with the brackets. They begin earlier, in the decisions made before anything is bonded.

  • Starting without records, so the plan rests on how the teeth look from the front.
  • Treating a case with a skeletal problem as if it were only a dental problem.
  • Using a wire sequence without understanding anchorage, which produces unplanned tooth movement.
  • Ignoring growth pattern and face type when choosing mechanics.
  • Reaching the end of treatment with no finishing goals and no retention plan.

A sensible case-selection ladder

StageCases
Begin withMild to moderate crowding or spacing in the permanent dentition, Class I molar relationship, simple rotations, single tooth crossbites.
Progress toDeep bite, extraction cases with a clear anchorage plan, cases assisted by mini implants.
Refer or co-manageSignificant skeletal discrepancy in a non-growing patient, marked asymmetry, cases that need orthognathic surgery, active periodontal disease, temporomandibular symptoms, medically complex patients.

Why records come before braces

A reliable plan needs an OPG, a lateral cephalogram, photographs and models or scans. Each answers a different question, and the plan improves when they are read together. The guide to orthodontic records explains what to look for in each.

What a good training program covers

A program built for general dentists should teach diagnosis and case selection, treatment planning, the armamentarium, bonding, wire sequences, biomechanics, finishing and retention, and it should offer support when your first cases run into trouble. Key takeaways

  • A BDS dentist can offer orthodontic treatment within dental council rules and personal competence.
  • Never present yourself as a specialist unless you hold the registered qualification.
  • Records and diagnosis come first, bonding comes later.
  • Choose simple cases first and refer what is beyond your training.

Frequently asked questions

Can a BDS dentist place braces?

Yes, within the rules of the state dental council and with adequate training. The dentist should not describe themselves as an orthodontist or specialist without the registered specialist qualification.

Which cases should a beginner avoid?

Cases with a significant skeletal discrepancy, severe crowding that needs complex extraction planning, marked asymmetry, temporomandibular symptoms, and patients with periodontal or complex medical problems should be referred, or treated with specialist input, until you have gained experience.
